Treatment FAQ's

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peeling is a cosmetic procedure based on the application of a chemical exfoliant to the skin in order to induce controlled necrosis of the epidermis and/or dermis  cells, resulting in the removal of skin lesions and imperfections to improve the overall skin texture.

Can any skin type have a chemical peel?

Not everybody is suitable for chemical peeling, particularly if they have delicate, reactive or very thin skin.  If this is the case enzymatic peels are more suitable.

Enzymatic peels are based on the application of digestive enzyme exfoliant to the skin to induce necrosis of the uppermost layer of the epidermal (dead) skin cells, leading to improved skin texture, radiance and luminous skin glow.  One of the main advantages of enzyme peeling is its suitability for hypersensitive and ethnic skins.

What are the different types of chemical peels available?

Various types of chemical peels exist, depending on how deeply they are required to penetrate the skin. The penetration depth of a peel is determined by:

  • The type and/or combination of the acids
  • The concentration of the acidic or enzymatic agent(s) in the peeling solution
  • The pH of the solution
  • The number of coats applied
  • And/or the timing of the procedure, from the application to the neutralisation of the peeling solution

In general, the deeper the peel the more dramatic skin improvement can be achieved, however there is also an associated higher risk of complications, increased pain and longer healing time.
